چکیده

Only within the past few years have technological advances made it possible to produce stents capable of negotiating the tortuosity of the intracranial circulation. Recently, the development of smaller, more pliable stents and delivery devices has greatly broadened the application of intracranial stenting for various clinicopathologic disease processes. In this review, we discuss the utility of stent implantation for the following cerebrovascular diseases: intracranial atherosclerosis and stenosis; arterial dissection; fusiform and widenecked aneurysms; venous occlusive disease; and acute vessel thrombosis. We also describe some of the basic technical aspects of intracranial stent insertion, along with the periprocedural medical management of patients.

Is there a future for endovascular treatment of intracranial atherosclerotic disease after Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Preventing Recurrent Stroke and Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS)?

The Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Preventing Recurrent Stroke and Intracranial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS) trial, a randomized clinical trial comparing aggressive medical management to stenting with aggressive medical management for symptomatic intracranial stenosis, was prematurely halted when a high rate of periprocedural events was found in the stent arm. The trial also demonstrated...

Emerging Therapy Critiques

Symptomatic intracranial stenoses are an important cause of stroke and have a high risk of recurrent stroke with medical therapy. The Stenting and Aggressive Medical Management for Preventing Recurrent Stroke in Intracranial Arterial Stenosis (SAMMPRIS) trial unexpectedly showed a higher-than-expected rate of complications with intracranial stenting and a lower-than-expected recurrence rate wit...

Current Status of the Application of Intracranial Venous Sinus Stenting

The intracranial venous sinus is an important component of vascular disease. Many diseases involve the venous sinus and are accompanied by venous sinus stenosis (VSS), which leads to increased venous pressure and high intracranial pressure. Recent research has focused on stenting as a treatment for VSS related to these diseases. However, a systematic understanding of venous sinus stenting (VS-S...

Severe symptomatic intracranial internal carotid artery stenosis treated with intracranial stenting: a single center study with 58 patients.

PURPOSE We aimed to investigate the safety and effectiveness of intracranial stenting in a population with severe (≥ 70%) symptomatic intracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) atherosclerotic stenosis. METHODS Fifty-eight patients with severe intracranial ICA atherosclerotic stenosis were prospectively enrolled. The baseline data, cerebral angiography, success rate, perioperative complicatio...
